But in general I agree a quick fizz buzz type challenge is likely to yield similar results to a more in-depth test with less effort required to evaluate the results. Why do that when you can spend 5 min and not pay them a penny to find out the same thing? They include the need to re-do the hire, for example, and all the admin associated with adding a person to your staff. I do not know where Shane's figures came from, but they don't seem unreasonable. All "Homework" tests discriminate against busy and in-demand people, and tend to test the wrong things domain knowledge that can be learned on the job, not aptitudes that can't.

Give them a small task which should only take maybe minutes to do, and tell them to justify in the comments why they chose that way of solving the problem. This is something that can be done in one night, and will give you insight to their thinking. I have a good job and a life.
